Be careful using these methods that are not approved shop methods where you work. If a screw up happens they'll likely come down hard on you.
Also, I understand you're young-ish and want to be progressive in the way you work. In my younger days I finally figured out that you will never gain the respect of the older employees in your shop until you leave. You'll always be the new, young, no-nothing guy to them. It was that way where I served my apprenticeship. I left and went to work at another shop and after a couple of years I came back to work at that place. The difference was night and day. They treated me as if I was a different person. Not saying you should quit but I'd definitely keep my eyes open after you gain some more experience. Don't be impatient. Your day will come.
