Drop shadow madness!!!

First, let me thank everyone who's responded to any of my posts the last few weeks. I was unaware of the responses because I apparently no longer get emails alerting me of new ones.... not sure why (wait, I just figured that out). So, I just saw all the responses today.... thanx!

On to the issue. The last couple of days a few proofs have crossed my desk that have some drop shadows that are basically eating the underlying image(s). It partially wipes out some of the elements of images below it. The elements are typically pretty thin lines (these are all vector files) or small text. You can tell that something is there but it's very faint and in some cases a bit choppy. The issue is limited to the shape and size of the shadow..... kind of like what I'd see if I were using an old version of our RIP (nexus)

The funny thing is that it's only happening occasionally. The rest of the images on the pages are very similar but are uneffected by the drop shadows on top of them. In some cases a single shadow falls over two overlapping images that are extremely similar but only one of them is effected.

All of the drop shadows are fundamentally the same- black, set to multiply and 40-75% opacity. There is nothing strange about them or the images they are messing with. All I can consider is that it's a weird linking problem and the underlying images are not being rendered correctly.... but I haven't tested that yet.... but, Flightcheck does say that many of the links are modified although InDesign says nothing of the sort. Otherwise I fear it may be the RIP.

Anyhoo, the issue appears on our iG4 and epson 7600 (though not as bad). We're using CS2 on non-intel machines. Workflow is customized PDF from ID (never had an issue like this before and have been using the preset for quite a while now) to a hot folder in Nexus 8.3 outputting a DCS to either proofer.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
~Soilworker
