Um, Interresting user name!
I would start my answer with the fact that if you're getting within 2% on a 21 step curve, you're within industry accepted standard....
We used to run all 3 of our Agfa imagesetters linear, no Xcurve was ever needed, as long as we kept the Dmax (exposure level measurement on film for maximum density) between.....
um... I think 4.8 - 5.2 Dmax.
We ran Agfa film, FYI.
