I guess it kind depends what kind of work/how much work, output devices /workflows you are using.
If your outputting to multiple devices, doing ROOM proofing and doing several processes at once and finding you are waiting for the workflow to keep up, then many be time to upgrade to a slave system,
Rather than adding a slave, maybe worth, just upgrading the server unit, evaluate and then maybe go for a new slave
