Good sir, allow me to add my Friday rant (even though it is Saturday, and I'm here AT WORK AGAIN!!!)
Tuesday--the 7 jobs (with no job #s) that I sent loose Epsons on last week all come back approved. You guessed it...they ALL have to print that day! There's a show in two days! (f*ck you and your shows. Like I never heard that one before). Now, I have to organize all the files, make impos on all, color correct files because the proofs were marked "OK but take down a little red on press." Then...I have to create die files for the pieces that die cut and I have to do it NOW because the jobs will be ready for diecutting tomorrow and it takes a day to get the dies.
Wednesday--this one's good. I get a job for 34 lots of trifolds. 34!!! I'm told I have to get out proofs by end of day. Did I mention that it was 34? At least make it 37 lots so I could chuckle at the "Clerks" reference. Oh, and I'm still doing damage control from the day before. Also, we had a wicked thunderstorm here and our power got knocked out twice, the second time it did, we had three plates imaging for a job that had to deliver tomorrow. All of a sudden, I was informed that the 34 lots can go out tomorrow.
Thursday--Job rack full. 3 lots of gatefolds come in and they WON'T RIP! Put that aside, get some other stuff done. Get interrupted from getting work out to have to go back to the gatefolds that won't rip. I have to get these out today. Fudge files...loose Epsons go out on time.
Friday--My co-worker informs me that he overheard the owner telling the client that the 34 lots of gatefolds are printed. Wait. What??? I didn't even RIP them yet!!!!! I throw something across the room. Somehow, magically, that job doesn't have to print until Tuesday. I can't figure it out, either. This is the craziest, most insane shop I've ever worked at in my LIFE! Okay, load up NEW pics for the three gatefolds. Going good. Major other disasters during the day. Oh no...I HAVE to leave by 5pm, plans. Inside of gatefold WILL NOT RIP no matter what I do. Now Quark crashes continuously and I have to reinstall Suitcase because my fonts are now all corrupt in the job. Swap out fonts, but job STILL will not rip. Doesn't even show up at the rip. Sorry guys, gotta go. I guess I'll have to come in on...
Saturday--The Pressroom foreman is always proud of himself because he thinks he's God. He had arranged for the bindery to come in with me and he gave me the back door key and showed me how to disarm the alarm. Smart guy, really knows his stuff. But I don't think God would have forgotten to give me the key to the front gate so I could get into the parking lot. Back to the gatefold. Kick the mac...still won't rip. Oooh, idea! Make a Quark EPS and import that page into InDesign CS2 and rip. Boy, I'm so good that it hurts. I can get ANYTHING to rip. I pat myself on the shoulder for my genuis. File gets to rip. Crashes. Helvetica Neue family once again is killing me. It's now 8 a.m. and I am almost out of ideas to get this job to rip. (Any suggestions would be appreciated). Don't wanna stay all day because my wife and kids are going away for two days and I wanted to hang with them all day today. But the client is expecting proofs on this monster Monday morning.
I would invite anyone to top the above as this has been the worst week of my entire prepress life. This place sucks. I am now "looking."
