The biggest "thing" that may happen, is not in the RIP so much, but at the actual output device. Some will handle color (like in the size of the gamut) differently, so you may have to make some modifications due to that. Maybe with an output curve, or some form of color management.
We've been known to do both on some jobs, depending on the output device and the job stock.
We have on all our devices the standard Esko FlexRIP, so that helps, but we still have differences in the device itself.
Say like, our HP 5000 takes a composite 1-bit tif, whereas my Lotem 800 needs a separated 1 bit tiff. The HP 5000 will put a butt load of ink on the paper for a heavy coverage job (rich blacks and such) so we have to put a serious curve on it to just be able to read it.
