Can someone help me out with Outlook 2003

Im sure there is a way to do this but I just think I'm missing it. Sometimes throughout the week my outlook will freeze up and wont recover especially when I try to use it with a few apps open (working on getting PC upgraded). Usually I have to force quit outlook or even reboot, but when you do you have to let outlook go though the whole recovery process that notes that this folder and that folder was not closed properly and needs to check it for problems. It takes a very long time to go though my folders, especially where I have about 2 years worth of emails in my outlook. Is there a way to save past emails on the hard drive, where they are no longer part of outlook, so when it needs to do a recovery it is much faster? But I would want to be able to recover them at a later time. I know there are personal folders right inside outlook, but it scans those to.....Thanks
