I've been lurking and posting since November but today I've finally gotten around to posting here.
My name is Paul Kubiak and I am the PrePress Manager of a small commerical printing company located an hour northwest of Chicago.
I started in this crazy business in 1996 right out of high school working on a small 1-color Halm Jet press. I moved from the pressroom after a year into PrePress doing Paste-up, platemaking, stripping, camera work, and typesetting, All the while working on my skills in applications such as Photoshop/Illustrator. Three years later I left to go to a larger company were I worked in Digital PrePress in every aspect from preflighting to imposition creation to page layout for 5 years.
I started in my current position in Sept. '04 and have been fixing things ever since. I am fluent in Prinergy and English and am attempting to master ApogeeX as a third language. I can't believe I've been in this trade for a decade already. If I've learned anything thus far, I've learned:
1.) Nothing "Works". It gets you by until the next crises.
2.) Being the jack of all trades saved my career.
3.) Unless CSR's and Sales started in PrePress, they will NEVER
understand why we "Can't just use the file".
4.) Everything is past due. Even the Jobs we haven't seen yet.
A few fun facts about me:
1a.) Nicknamed "Sea Monkey"
2a.) Graphic Artist in my spare time.
3a.) Complete 80's toy and movie geek.
4a.) I'm a second generation printer.
5a.) I like cheese.
That's all.
