How can you gaurantee color accuracy online for four color work?

I have looked into softproofing and it seems very complicated because you not only have to manage your color calibration, but your clients also.
It is my understanding that you must have certain types of monitors for softproofing to work anyway.
As we all know, every monitor varies in display performance. This in itself makes monitor proofing inconsistent.

We do not have a need for proofing video, flash etc. PDFs are already used in proofing but usually just for content and color breaks.

We have also considered remote proofing as an option.
